The Seychelles’ rich marine life is going to be celebrated for one very special week in December. The 2016 Seychelles Ocean Festival is taking place from 2nd – 9th December and will replace the Sub Indian Ocean Seychelles (SUBIOS), also known as Seychelles Festival of the Sea. It’s an event that yachting enthusiasts and ocean lovers always look forward to since it embraces a host of events and exhibitions dedicated to the archipelago’s surrounding waters.
Seychelles Ocean Festival will build on the strong reputation that SUBIOS has already established since it began in 1990. The new festival format seeks to broaden the event’s appeal by involving all maritime sectors and tourism companies. It still seeks to raise the profile of the Seychelles as the ultimate maritime destination but now encourages independent tourist businesses to participate by organising their own events across the islands. The Ocean Festival will entertain as well as educate with a forum on sustainable fisheries being organised by the Department of Blue Economy in tandem with the event.
The official launch of the Seychelles Ocean Festival will take place at The Wharf Hotel and Marina on Friday 2nd December. Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine and Sherin Francis, the chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, will address attendees. The Seychelles Tourism Board will also launch the new Seychelles Ocean Festival website at the event. A gala dinner is scheduled for Saturday 3rd December at the Eden Bleu Hotel on Eden Island. Mario Hardy, the Chief Executive of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) will give a presentation as the guest of honour.
A photographic exhibition of rare and old photos called ‘Seychelles and the Sea’ will be on display. It highlights the diversity and beauty of the Indian Ocean and the importance of maritime traditions in the Seychelles. SmartYacht has always appreciated this little corner of the ocean and that’s why we offer some fantastic yacht co-ownership options in the stunning archipelago.
The Seychelles are also a great place for a family holiday and the festival will demonstrate this by holding a family day of fun activities at the palm-fringed bay of Anse Royale on the 4th December. Participants and spectators can enjoy a triathlon, boat rides, diving, snorkelling, canoeing and an underwater treasure hunt. On land, there will be a selection of marine-themed food stalls, games and a live music show featuring the ‘Horizons’.
