We were delighted that SmartYacht CEO Gerhard Chemelli was recently featured on the Luxury Travel Mag website. He talked about how after seven years in business, SmartYacht’s co-ownership concept still benefits yacht owners and those who want to experience the yachting lifestyle with less of a commitment. He highlighted the different options we offer, from our popular Vacation Club option to sole ownership. We’ve selected some of the highlights of his interview.
We have three basic options: Vacation Club, yacht co-ownership and sole ownership. Mr Chemelli started by describing the different customised yacht ownership and usage options. He mentioned the Vacation Club that starts at 34,900 euros and provides 18 weeks use over three years. It is designed for people who do not want to own a yacht but want access to one and more involvement than a normal yacht charter.
Secondly, he explained the co-ownership model that starts at 139,000 euros and brings together a maximum of four shareholders. This method grants each owner “almost unlimited use of a yacht up to four times the value than their own personal budget permits.” Finally, he details SmartYacht’s provision of yacht management and concierge services to existing luxury motor yacht owners. Mr Chemelli says this option gives clients the “opportunity to generate consistent and highly secure income via our club membership program tailored around their specific usage requirements”.
When asked about the goal of SmartYacht, Mr Chemelli explained our essential outlook which is “simply to make luxury motor yachting more enjoyable, less stressful and more affordable”. Essentially this means we offer a high-quality to value ratio: “Our clients will get at least four times the value for their budget, i.e. larger and more luxurious yachts.”
We are dedicated to making the yachting aficionado’s life easier by guaranteeing anything from 6 weeks’ use per year via both long-term and short-term bookings. The importance of our clients’ ease of use cannot be emphasised enough: “We want our clients to only concern themselves with stepping aboard and enjoying their precious vacation time, they simply have to decide where to go and where to drop anchor and we’ll take care of the rest.”
Mr Chemelli then mentioned our other priority which is to “reduce each co-owner’s ecological footprint by sharing our earth’s precious resources” and importantly provide the best value possible for any yachting aficionado. The concept of bringing together a small exclusive group of international clients means each will get anything from six weeks guaranteed use each year to unlimited use for co-owners made up of long term and short term bookings.
The Difference Between Co-ownership and Membership
Mr Chemelli went on to point out the differences between co-ownership and membership by explaining how the model guarantees full ownership of a particular vessel. This can either be a single owner or a group of two, three or four co-owners that come from across the globe. We ensure minimal overlaps occur in the annual holiday schedule so co-owners can have access to the yacht when they want it. He elucidates, “we pre-determine at entry into contract specific must-have dates for each co-owner guaranteeing access rights to specific periods until a particular share or the yacht is sold.”
Every single owner automatically becomes a Top 100 World Club Member and also has access to all other yachts in all SmartYacht’s international destinations. Top 100 World Club members also benefit from a “first-class concierge service that opens almost every door with a click of the fingers.” As for the level of commitment, “all co-owners are fully independent and can sell their share at any time they want and we will assist them to expedite this process to the best of our ability should this situation arise.”
Vacation Club membership is what Mr Chemelli describes as “the most exciting yacht club in the world.” Club members have no obligations or fixed costs; they only pay for the operational costs of the yacht used for the period they are on board. Club memberships have a limited three-year lifespan, with a one-year extension option. In the basic version, members have access and the right to use a particular yacht class at two different global locations for eighteen weeks over a three-year period. Whereas, the Top 100 World Membership provides access to all yachts in all classes on every SmartYacht service point in the world.
The Location of SmartYacht’s Fleet
The yachts are located in international hot spots in the Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf (Dubai), Seychelles and the Caribbean. We are currently planning to expand to other global locations in the USA, Asia and Australia. Mr Chemelli suggests that this where the multi-yacht, multi-location model works well and beats the competition: “Given we have and will continue to expand an international fleet, we offer an all-year-round season; far more than a common single-yacht ownership can ever provide.”
Yacht Brands and Service
When it comes to yacht brand, type, and sizes of yachts, we rely on our co-owners to inform us of their preferences. We then seek other co-owners from our large database of prospective international clients who have the same exact requirements. We advise based on their budget, number of guests they wish to have aboard, and the kind of cruising they would like to do, but we always recommend that our clients purchase only well-known brands. This is why we select Sunseeker, Azimut and Princess among others in our continually expanding fleet. When on board, co-owners and members can expect to see “yachts in pristine condition, fully equipped with modern navigation tools, cleaned prior to each visit like one would expect from a five-star hotel, complete with fresh bedding and towels.”
SmartYacht’s clients can determine the level of service they desire via our concierge service. They can choose between smaller sport yachts to pilot themselves or our executive and luxury-class yachts that come with a captain and full crew (if required). Mr Chemelli emphasised the quality of our crews which are “trained to the highest levels of service as one would expect on a luxury cruise liner.” In fact, our Top 100 World Members can expect “a full concierge service, including limousine airport transfers, tickets for events such as opera, concerts, film festivals, restaurant bookings, berths in hot spot guest Marinas, and will be invited to join us and our owners for international networking opportunities at special events like the Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.”
